BMW EfficientDynamics combines efficiency and driving pleasure with the aim of approaching the ultimate goal of zero-emissions driving.
BMW EfficientDynamics has allowed the BMW Group to reduce the CO2 emissions of its European fleet of new cars by 30% since 1998, with a further 25% reduction expected by the summer of 2020. Since summer 2013 there are already 22 BMW models operating under 120g CO2/km. Our cars’ intelligent energy management and lightweight construction, along with improvements to aerodynamics and engine efficiency all combine to make sustainable mobility a reality today. 
Every BMW features the very latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. These include BMW TwinPower TurboTechnology, Auto Start-Stop and ECO PRO mode. Our research also focuses on the development of innovative engine technologies such as BMW ActiveHybrid and BMW eDrive technology, as well as the BMW Hydrogen 7 with hydrogen drive.
Inspired by the EfficientDynamics philosophy, BMW i develops visionary new vehicle concepts based on electromobility, such as the BMW i3 (Megacity Vehicle) and the BMW i8. The BMW X5 Concept eDrive.

The BMW X5 Concept eDrive is the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from BMW to combine the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive with an innovative BMW plug-in hybrid system. This combination ensures that the BMW X5 Concept eDrive stands not only for brand-typical sportiness and a luxurious ambience, but also efficiency and environmental-friendliness.

AERODYNAMICS.

The entire design of the BMW X5 is testament to the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The optimised, aerodynamic front apron and undercarriage feature innovative improvements that reduce air resistance and fuel consumption.
  • The front apron is a prominent design feature that embodies the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy. The integrated Air Curtain channels air through two vertical air inlets and along the front wheel arches. The accelerated air flow creates a kind of "curtain" on the outer side of the wheels. Then there’s the Air Breather, which channels the air flow at the front wheels. These innovative technologies reduce turbulence and air resistance, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
  • The automatic air vent control uses a sensor to continuously assess the current cooling needs of the engine. It opens or closes the radiator air vents in response, optimising aerodynamic performance and shortening the warm-up phase to reduce fuel consumption.
  • The rear spoiler at the roof edge combined with the Air Blades on either side work together to create a highly efficient ‘trailing edge’. The precisely-defined air flow at the rear of the car reduces disruptive air swirl, keeping the braking effect of negative pressure to a minimum.

ECO PRO mode.

As soon as you switch to the ECO PRO mode, everything is geared towards greater efficiency. Depending on your individual driving style, this results in up to a 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption (based on a BMW fuel consumption study). 
A further five percent can be saved through preview assistant and ECO PRO Route. This mode optimises accelerator and transmission response as well as shift points, and intelligently adapts the heating/air conditioning strategy. The Control Display shows you which EfficientDynamics technologies are currently engaged to help lower your fuel consumption. You’ll also receive ECO PRO tips that relate to your current driving situation to help you boost efficiency even further.
The preview assistant is an innovative highlight of ECO PRO mode. It  works in conjunction with the Professional Navigation System. Based on navigation data, it detects bends, built-up areas, roundabouts, T-junctions, speed limits and motorway exits along the route and gives you tips in advance to help you reduce speed early.
ECO PRO mode also includes ECO PRO Route. This works with the new generation of Professional Navigation System to take different factors into account, including individual driving style, current traffic situation and road conditions to calculate the most fuel-efficient route. The on-board computer displays your bonus mileage – how many additional miles you have gained from using ECO PRO mode.

BMW X5 sDrive25d.

The BMW X5 sDrive25d is the most efficient version of the range. Rather than all-wheel drive, it has rear-wheel drive. The resulting weight benefit has a huge impact on its low fuel consumption and emission levels.
With 160 kW (218 hp), the BMW X5 sDrive25d offers a dynamic drive – with a combined fuel consumption between 49.6 and 50.4 mpg. Despite this fuel efficiency, it can still accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in an impressive 8.2 seconds.

EU6 emissions.

The pioneering technologies in the BMW X5 engines already meet the strict EU6 emission standards.
BMW engines have always been ahead of their time – they have been at the heart of our expertise since 1917. The engines in the BMW X5 are impressive examples of this. With outstanding performance, spontaneous response and remarkably smooth running, they meet the highest standards of driving comfort.
You can look forward with confidence thanks to BMW BluePerformance technology, now standard on all diesel models. Thanks to this technology, we have been able to optimise the emissions of diesel engines even further. In addition to the diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, there is also NOx catalyst storage which further reduces the level of nitric oxide in the exhaust gas. Nitric oxide is further reduced by the SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with AdBlue Injection. A chemical reaction triggered by injection of the AdBlue fluid greatly reduces nitric oxide emissions. In this way, you can be sure that you drive one of the cleanest diesel vehicles in the world with greatly reduced exhaust emissions that already meet the requirements of the strict EU6 emissions standard that come into effect in 2014.
